How to use the Compress Image to 20KB tool

  1. Choose your photo

Add a JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC image (one file or several at once).

  2. 20 KB is already set

The compressor opens in Target size mode at 20 KB. Tap another chip, such as 50 KB, if your form allows more.

  3. Compare and download

Check the final size and the before/after view, then download the image or a ZIP of all files.

Why use KBSnap’s Compress Image?

Ready for form limits
Target size mode is preset to 20 KB, a common limit for photo and signature uploads.
Quality first, then size
Quality is lowered only as far as needed, and pixel dimensions are reduced only if quality alone can't reach 20 KB.
JPG output for portals
Choose JPG as the output when a portal accepts only JPEG, or keep the original format.
Several photos at once
Compress photos for different forms or family members in one go and download them as a ZIP.
No upload, no account
Your photo is compressed on your device: nothing is sent to a server and there's nothing to sign up for.

Where a 20 KB limit usually comes up

A 20 KB ceiling typically appears on application forms that collect a small applicant photo and signature: recruitment drives, entrance tests, scholarship schemes and university admission portals. You'll also see it on:

  • Passport-size photos uploaded with job and exam applications, often together with fixed pixel dimensions.
  • Signatures, where the form asks for a range such as 10–20 KB.
  • Thumbnails for listings, directories and student or staff ID systems.
  • Profile pictures on older websites and intranets with small upload limits.

Forms differ and their rules change, so always check the current instructions for yours. This page simply gets your file under 20 KB with as much quality as possible.

How sharp will a 20 KB image be?

20 KB is twice the room of a 10 KB limit, and at the sizes forms usually ask for, it's enough for a genuinely sharp photo. What you get depends on the pixel dimensions:

  • Up to about 300 × 400 px: faces look natural and crisp. A 200 × 230 px form photo fits at high quality with room to spare.
  • Around 400 × 500 px: still good for a portrait on a plain background, with slight softening in fine detail such as hair.
  • Full-size phone photos: the tool scales them down towards this range automatically, because 12 million pixels can't fit in 20 KB at a usable quality.

Plain backgrounds help a lot. A face against a white wall leaves most of the 20 KB for your features, while a patterned background or a busy room spends the budget on detail nobody needs.

Worked example: a 200 × 230 px photo under 20 KB

Suppose an exam portal asks for a JPG photograph of 200 × 230 pixels, maximum 20 KB, and you have a 4 MB selfie from your phone.

  1. Make the photo the right size first: in the Image Resizer, enter 200 × 230 px and choose Crop to fill so nothing is stretched. If you want guides for head position, prepare the photo in the Passport Photo Maker first.
  2. Add the 200 × 230 px image here. The target is already 20 KB.
  3. With only 46,000 pixels to store, the compressor can use a high quality setting: the file lands under 20 KB with no visible loss.
  4. Download it and check that the file's properties show 200 × 230 px before you upload.

Common mistakes with 20 KB uploads

  • Skipping the pixel requirement. If you only compress, a large photo is scaled to whatever dimensions fit 20 KB, not the 200 × 230 px or 3.5 × 4.5 cm the form may demand. Resize first, compress second.
  • Uploading the wrong format. Some portals accept only .jpg or .jpeg files. Set the output format to JPG, especially for PNG screenshots and iPhone HEIC photos.
  • Using the compressor for signatures. It will make the file small, but it won't crop the paper or whiten the background. The Signature Resizer does both and also handles minimum-KB rules.
  • Cutting it too fine. If your file comes out at 19.9 KB and the portal still complains, set the target to 18 KB and try again.

Frequently asked questions

How can I reduce my photo size to 20 KB?

Add the photo on this page; the 20 KB target is preset. The compressor picks the best quality that fits under 20 KB and, for large photos, reduces the dimensions too. Then download the JPG.

What pixel size works best for a 20 KB photo?

Anything up to about 300 × 400 px looks sharp at 20 KB. If your form gives exact dimensions, use those. Smaller sizes such as 200 × 230 px leave plenty of room for high quality.

How do I compress a photo to 20 KB without losing quality?

Resize it to the dimensions the form needs before compressing. With fewer pixels to store, the tool can keep the quality high, and the before/after slider lets you confirm there's no visible difference.

Can I compress a signature to 20 KB here?

You can, but the Signature Resizer is a better fit: it crops the signature, cleans the background and lets you set both the pixel size and a 10–20 KB range.

My form says 3.5 × 4.5 cm and under 20 KB. What should I do?

Use the Image Resizer's Print size option to set 3.5 × 4.5 cm (a DPI of 100–150 keeps the pixel count small), then compress the result to 20 KB here. Check whether the form also lists pixel dimensions.

Can I compress several photos to 20 KB at once?

Yes. Add them all, keep the 20 KB target, and each image is compressed separately to fit. Download them one by one or as a single ZIP.
