When you need a Pakistan passport size photo
For a new or renewed Pakistani passport at a passport office, your photo is normally captured on the spot along with your fingerprints, so you don’t need to bring prints. You will need your own photo for:
- Online passport applications through the official DGIP portal, which ask you to upload a photo that meets the instructions shown there;
- Visa applications to other countries – embassies and visa centres usually want printed photos in their own format (see the Schengen visa photo page, for example);
- Pakistan visa applications by foreign nationals, which are made online with a digital photo;
- Everyday forms – university and college admissions, board and entry-test registrations, job applications and bank forms often ask for passport size photos.
Check the current rules on the DGIP website or with the relevant embassy before you apply.
Pakistan passport photo size and requirements
| Requirement | Typical rule |
|---|---|
| Size | 35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm) |
| Head height (tool guide) | 32–36 mm, chin to crown |
| Background | Plain white |
| Face | Straight to the camera, eyes open, neutral expression |
| Glasses | Remove them; no tinted lenses |
| Head covering | Religious head coverings are usually allowed if your whole face is visible |
| Photo age | Recent – ideally taken within the last six months |
Embassies and forms sometimes ask for something different – US visas, for example, need a 2 × 2 inch photo – so always follow the size printed on your form.
Printing: 4×6 at a photo shop or A4 at home
The simplest route is to download the 4×6 in sheet as JPG and take it to a photo studio or print shop. Ask for a normal 4×6 (4R) print on glossy photo paper, not “fit to frame”, then cut along the guides to get several identical copies.
If you send the file on WhatsApp, send it as a document, not as a photo – WhatsApp compresses photos, which makes prints look soft.
At home, print the A4 PDF on photo paper at 100% scale. Plain printer paper gives a dull, flimsy photo that may be refused. Keeping a few spare prints and the digital file saves a trip to the studio every time a new form asks for photos.
Getting the white background right
Pakistani forms usually ask for a white background, and this tool doesn’t replace backgrounds – so the wall you choose matters most.
- Use the plainest white wall in the house, or tape a smooth white bedsheet or chart paper behind you.
- Take the photo in daylight near a window. Warm yellow bulbs make a white wall look cream or beige.
- Stand a step or two away from the wall, so your shadow falls behind you and not on it.
- Avoid white clothes – a white shirt or dupatta can blend into the background.
- Make sure your face is evenly lit, with no shadow on one side.
